If you’re like most people, you wake up each day to the incessant buzzing of an alarm clock, somewhat resistant to the act of waking up and facing the day. Most of us pry ourselves out from underneath the cozy covers of our warm, comfortable beds, and do so only because of some prior obligation.
We have to be somewhere… do something… take care of, or answer to someone else, and if given the choice, most of us would continue sleeping. As a result, we meet our day in a state of resistance. On some level, we tell ourselves and the universe, “No, I don’t want to wake up, create, and live an extraordinary life! I’d rather just lay hear, unconscious, while others create the lives of their dreams.” What a way to start the day, huh?
Is there a better way?
Hitting My Rock Bottom
They say that greatness is born out of either inspiration, or desperation. When I discovered The Miracle Morning, I was definitely desperate. In fact, I was at the lowest point in my life. I had hit my rock bottom. Could things have been worse? Probably. But was this was the worst they had ever been for me? Absolutely.
I’ll spare you all of the woe-is-me details, but a few highlights are that I was in my mid-twenties and in the midst of losing everything I had worked for. My business, through which I had been earning me a six-figure income, was now failing and losing money every month. I had accumulated over $50,000 in credit card debt, was unable to pay my mortgage, and lost my first home.
Mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and especially financially — you name it, I was struggling.
To be honest, the only place I felt safe was in my bed. You see, it was the one place where I could seemingly hide from my problems as I crawled under the covers and drifted off to sleep each night, and I was reluctant to leave it’s safe haven each morning. Yet, everyday when the alarm clock sounded, I had to wake up and face the painful reality that was my life.
Then, one day, everything changed…
The Day That Turned My Life Around
I finally broke down to one of my closest friends and confessed how bad things had gotten. I told him that for the first time in my life, I was feeling depressed, and I didn’t know how to turn things around.
He asked me if I was exercising regularly. “Yeah right” I said. “I can barely get out of bed everyday; exercise is the last thing on my mind.”
He strongly recommended that I get out of the house and go for a run. He said it would get oxygen to my brain, so that I would not only feel better, but be able to think clearer and figure out solutions to my problems.
Although I despised running, I was desperate. So, the next morning I laced up my basketball shoes (hey, I told you I wasn’t a runner), grabbed my iPod and headed out the front door.
With Jim Rohn’s powerful voice booming in my ears, Jim said something that morning that would change everything. “Your level of success will seldom exceed your level of personal development. If you want your life to get better, you have to get better, first.” I stopped running. It hit me.
The reason my life wasn’t getting any better was because I wasn’t getting any better. I was staying the same and wishing my life would change. I wasn’t committed to daily personal development. I didn’t have time. I was too busy just trying to survive and pay my bills. Where the hell was I going to find “extra” time for my personal development? And I sure as hell wasn’t feeling very motivated, more like depressed. Until that moment. In that moment, inspiration was born out of desperation. Thankfully all it takes — to change the course of your entire life — is a moment.
Physically, I turned around and ran home. Metaphorically, I was about to create a process that would turn my entire life around.
The Success Parallel
As I eagerly ran home, excited to create a plan for how I was going to incorporate daily personal development into my life, I started to process what Jim Rohn had said: “Your level of success will seldom exceed your level of personal development. If you want your life to get better, you have to get better, first.”
In other words, if we want “level 10″ success in any area of our life (assuming we’re measuring success on a scale of 1-10), we must first develop our level of personal development (PD) to be a level 10 in that area. As we increase your level of PD (our inner world), our level of success in our outer world will rise to parallel our level of PD. Relatively simple, yet extremely profound.
Finding Time For Personal Development
Having barely broken a sweat on my brief run, I sat on my living room couch with my weekly planner and a pen, feeling excited as I searched for that “extra” time I would need for the personal development that was going to be so crucial to turning my life around. But finding the time was easier said than done…
Maybe I could do it in the evening, after work? No, who am I kidding. I’m so exhausted after work; personal development is the last thing I’m going to want to do. I know myself, I’ll end up finding an excuse and putting it off. Not to mention that’s the only time I have to spend with my wife.
What about squeezing it in during the day? Yeah right, there’s just no way; my schedule is full. Besides, even if I scheduled it, I know it would get put off and replaced by more urgent matters.
The only other time is early in the morning, but I am NOT a morning person. It’s hard enough waking up everyday at 6:00 A.M. because I have to get ready for work. What am I going to do, wake up at 5:00 A.M. for personal development?
In that moment, I remembered something that my mentor, Kevin Bracy said: “If you want your life to be different, you have to be willing to do something different, first.” Damn it, I knew he was right.
So, I made the bold move of writing it into my schedule: 5:00 A.M. – PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. Surprisingly, writing it was actually the difficult part (Picture pen in hand, quivering over the paper). Once it was written in my schedule, looking at it got me excited. Then, I pulled out a piece of paper and started brainstorming what I would do during my “PD Hour.”
6 Life Changing Practices (That Will Eventually Become The Life S.A.V.E.R.S.)
What have we been told for years, by all of the self-help gurus and experts, that we should do each day if we want to experience extraordinary happiness, fulfillment, and success in our lives? That was the question I asked myself, and here’s the list I came up with:
- Silence (Meditation/Prayer)
This list represented the “best practices” I had learned from guru after guru, expert after expert, highly successful person after highly successful person – and yet I wasn’t consistently practicing any of them. Maybe you can relate?
Sure, I frequently bought self-help books and started reading them, although rarely finishing most of the books I started. Judging by the impressive collection of books on my shelf, you’d think I was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge! Too bad that was hardly the case.
Yes, I created a Vision Board when the hit movie “The Secret” came out (who didn’t?), and I gave visualization a try for a few weeks. But it never felt concrete and my mind always seemed to wander, thus I lost the discipline to continue.
I even had a handful of lined journals sitting on my shelf, although most of them with no more than a few entries. The more recent the journal, the more expensive it typically was. You see, I thought that if I spent more money on a journal, I would be more likely to actually write in it. Seems like a good theory, right?
In that moment, I realized that I wasn’t doing the things that successful people had told me I needed to do, and therefore it wasn’t a mystery that my life wasn’t where I wanted it to be. But that was about to change. I assigned time frames of 10 minutes to each of the 6 practices, to fill my hour of PD, then went about the rest of my day. Only, for the first time in a long time, I had a renewed confidence and I went about my day feeling lighter, almost free from my weight and stress that I usually felt thinking about my problems. I sensed that things were about to change, because I was about to change…
Waking Up Like It Was Christmas Morning
There is no time in my life that I can remember being more excited to wake up in the morning than I was each year as a kid on Christmas. Similarly, as I laid there in bed the night before my first day of what would eventually become known as The Miracle Morning, I was excited and couldn’t wait for the morning to come.
When it did, my eyes shot open! I jumped out of bed, turned my alarm clock off, and headed to the living room where I had a personal development book, a journal (my “most” expensive one, of course), some affirmations I printed off of the internet, and a yoga DVD, ready to go.
I started with 10 minutes of Silence. I sat, very calm, and breathed deeply. I said a prayer of gratitude to appreciate the moment, and a prayer for strength and guidance on my journey. I did a few minutes of what I thought was meditation, and as I sat in Silence, I was totally present to the moment. I wasn’t worrying about anything, just allowing my mind to be calm, my body to relax, and letting my stress melt away.
Wow, what a different way to start the day! Instead of waking up because I had to be somewhere, do something, answer to or take care of someone else–rushing carelessly into my hectic day feeling stressed and overwhelmed—I was at peace. You might imagine how different it felt to spend the first 10 minutes sitting in peaceful, purposeful Silence.
The next 50 minutes were equally as empowering. I read affirmations that gave me hope by reminding me that every single person on earth (myself included) can truly can accomplish anything we put our minds to. I visualized myself engaged in my daily activities and achieving all of my goals. I wrote into my journal what I was grateful for, what I needed to improve, and which specific actions I was committed to taking that day. I read a handful of pages out of the book Think & Grow Rich, and then I got energized with 10 minutes of yoga.
By 6:00 A.M. I felt like a different person! I felt extremely motivated, and yet equally at peace. I had already had what was quite literally the best day I had experienced in months, and it was only 6:00 A.M.! I couldn’t wait to do it again the next day.
The Miracle Morning Transforms My Life
After weeks of waking up at 5:00 A.M. and doing my morning PD routine, I was experiencing such extraordinary benefits that I decided I wanted more. So, I started waking up at 4:00 A.M.
Within 2 months I had also figured out how to turn my financial situation around, stopped losing money every month, and started rebuilding my savings. I went from hating running to training for and eventually completing a 52-mile ultra marathon. I was exercising everyday, meditating everyday, recording it all in my journal. Most importantly, I was the happiest I had ever been. All in all, literally every area of my life was transformed.
I started telling my Coaching clients about my morning routine, and most of them initially responded with resistance, proclaiming, “But Hal, I am not a morning person!” However, after just one day of trying it for themselves, just like me, they became morning people. And just like me, they began experiencing unbelievable breakthroughs in multiple areas of their lives.
As a result of such consistent and “miraculous” breakthroughs for virtually every person that followed my morning process, I began calling it The Miracle Morning…
TMM Becomes a Movement
A couple of months later, I was searching for a video of mine on YouTube. I typed in “Hal Elrod” into the search (don’t judge, you know you’ve Googled yourself!) and a video came up titled “Miracle Morning @ Joe’s – Now Everyday Feels Like Xmas!” What??
My first thought was, who is this Joe guy, and who does he think he is trying to steal The Miracle Morning? (Yes, I got a little defensive.) However, as I clicked play and began to watch this 41-second video, I quickly figured out that Joe had heard about TMM from one of my Coaching clients, and he was recording this video (at 5:41 A.M.) talking about how The Miracle Morning changed his life and made waking up everyday feel like Christmas!
Wow! In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of purpose and responsibility. I realized TMM was a lot more than just my little morning routine. This was truly something that could transform the lives of anyone who experienced it, and it was my responsibility to share it with the world.
